Among globally important issues such as trade, security and human rights, Mr Hammond and Mr Meade discussed the ‘2015’ Dual Years of the UK and Mexico. Taking place all year, these will feature events in the fields of the arts, creative economy, education, science and innovation, trade, and tourism, strengthening links at all levels between the two countries.

Speaking after the meeting, the Foreign Secretary said:

Mexico is a country with which we share strong and lasting ties, and this is reflected in the State Visit due to take place next month. More and more Mexican students are studying in the UK, and vice versa, and we are aiming to double our bilateral trade with Mexico to over £4billion by the end of 2015.

The Foreign Minister and I discussed international issues common to both nations, particularly the fight against extremism and efforts to improve international security. Only with strong partners can we hope to make this a safer and more sustainable world for the next generation.

I also raised recent human rights issues and underlined our concern over increasing levels of violence and impunity in Mexico, which I know the Mexican government shares.

Minister Meade is in the UK to work on a programme for Mexican President Peña Nieto, who will carry out a State Visit next month. This will be the President’s first full bilateral programme in the UK since taking office, and will see him undertake a range of engagements aimed at improving the UK’s links with Mexico.
