We have maintained our advice against all travel to certain areas, notably along Iran’s borders with Iraq, Pakistan and Afghanistan. However, we no longer advise against all but essential travel to the rest of Iran and have also updated our advice to provide greater clarity on the risks that may affect British nationals travelling to Iran.

Foreign Secretary Philip Hammond said:

Travel advice for every country is reviewed on a regular basis and informed by the latest information. Our policy is to recommend against travel to an area when we judge that the risk is unacceptably high. We consider that continues to be the case for specific areas of Iran, notably along Iran’s borders with Iraq, Afghanistan and Pakistan. But we believe that in other areas of Iran the risk to British nationals has changed, in part due to decreasing hostility under President Rouhani’s Government.

The UK carries out individual travel advice assessments. However, these changes bring our advice more into line with the majority of our key partners.

The British Embassy in Tehran remains closed. Travellers should be aware that the consular support we can offer is therefore limited. British Nationals should consider carefully the risks of travelling to Iran. British nationals requiring urgent consular assistance in Iran can contact the Swedish Embassy or the Embassy of any other EU Member State in Tehran.
