News story: Reading man guilty of providing unlawful immigration advice
Howard Ogbonmwan, 47, of Visionary Community Ambassadors, Arlington Business Park, Reading, pleaded guilty at Reading Magistrates’ Court on 25 February 2016, to 6 counts of providing unqualified immigration advice or services between October 2013 and February 2015.
He was sentenced to a Community Order of 100 hours unpaid work to be carried out within 12 months and ordered to pay prosecution costs of £1,500 and a victim surcharge of £60.
During sentencing District Judge Lachhar said:
“This legislation was passed to protect persons from unqualified persons like you when they are seeking immigration advice.
“This is exactly the sort of case parliament had in mind and you should not have provided unqualified advice and services to persons who were already vulnerable because of their position. With your previous experience and training you should have known that.”
Speaking about the decision, Deputy Immigration Services Commissioner, Ian Leigh, said:
“Mr Ogbonmwan chose to operate outside the law, and without regard for the protection of his clients.
“I am delighted with the outcome of this case, and I hope it sends a clear message to other people considering providing immigration advice – act within the law or you will find yourself in court.”
